Donald Trump and Republicans are selling us out to make billionaires like Elon Musk even richer. They’re trying to ram through Trump’s tax scam — handing billions to the ultra-wealthy while slashing health care, food assistance, and other programs that everyday Americans rely on to survive. We can’t let them get away with it.
What’s in the big, ugly bill?
Republicans in Congress are on a mission to strip working families of $1.5 trillion in Medicaid, SNAP, and other essential programs. This is all to pay for more than $4.5 trillion in tax breaks for the super-rich.
Here’s just some of the terrible things in the bill:
Massive cuts to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that would leave 16 million people without healthcare
Denying food assistance to more than 11 million people
Attacks on the trans community by banning gender affirming care from being covered by Medicaid or as an essential health benefit for ACA insurance plans
Decimated access to reproductive healthcare by defunding Planned Parenthood and banning ACA plans from covering abortion care
Higher costs of home utility bills because of cuts to clean energy investments
Skyrocketing costs of college by eliminating student loan programs and slashing Pell Grant funding
The consequences are brutal and deadly. If they succeed, millions will lose access to healthcare. Kids will go hungry. Families will face soaring costs for housing, groceries, and care.
This isn’t a budget. It’s an attack. And they know how deeply unpopular it is. That’s why they’re using the budget reconciliation process, a fast-track maneuver to bypass normal debate and accountability, to jam it through with just 51 votes.
Divisions in the GOP
House Republicans have already passed the bill, but the fight isn’t over. As shocking as this may be to believe, Republicans’ grip on power is shaky. Republicans are divided, and their majority is razor-thin. That gives us a powerful opening to fight back— to stall, to block, and to tank this sham bill.
The bill still has to pass in the Senate, so we’re going to turn up the heat there. There are plenty of opportunities to delay, disrupt, and defeat the Trump tax scam.
Since the reconciliation bill squeaked through the House a few weeks ago, the Senate has proposed dramatic changes -- only adding to the divides between right-wing and far right-wing factions in the party:
ON MEDICAID: Senate Republicans plan to cut funding even further and shift more of the financial burden onto states. That’s making “budget hawks” happy but risks losing support from vulnerable Republicans in both chambers. Republicans also remain deeply divided on so-called work requirements. They're all more than happy to take healthcare away from people, but who and how many will be cut is driving internal strife.
ON STATE AND LOCAL TAXES (SALT): Senate Republicans blew up “the SALT Deal” that Speaker Johnson needs to keep blue-state Republicans in line. Without a resolution, House Republicans from New York, California, and other blue states may flip to NO votes.
ON ENERGY INVESTMENT: Republicans in both chambers remain wildly divided over tax incentives for eco-friendly purchases like electric vehicles. Hard-right Republicans want them cut entirely and immediately; most others -- even their top donor Elon Musk -- disagree. Neither side seems ready to back down.
ON JUDICIAL POWERS: Senate leaders plan to replace the House’s No Contempt Clause with a different, but no less horrifying, attack on courts’ ability to hold Trump officials in check. It’s a dangerous ploy that likely runs afoul of Senate rules.
There are no easy fixes for Republican leadership here. The divides are so deep, and the cuts so politically toxic, that we have a real shot at flipping four votes to stop reconciliation in the Senate outright like we did in 2017.
And passing this bill through the Senate isn’t even the hardest part! Either the House will have to vote again to pass the Senate’s version, or party leaders will need to come up with a third version that can pass both chambers.
Time to take action!
Republicans hope to queue up Senate votes on this horrific bill as soon as next week with the aim to pass their version of H.R. 1 by the July 4th holiday. Let’s not waste a moment ensuring they hear our voices and feel our anger.
We can kill this bill by building a strong, cross-party coalition of Americans who strongly oppose it. Here’s how:

YOUR SCRIPT:
Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, STATE].
I’m calling to urge Senator [NAME] to oppose H.R. 1, the budget reconciliation bill, and its harmful cuts to vital government programs.
Millions of Americans will lose their health insurance, children in need will go without school meals, and working families will face higher costs for housing, healthcare, and groceries — all so billionaires can receive massive handouts.
Congress should pass a fair and responsible budget that helps working families and communities, not one that slashes our benefits to fund tax cuts for the wealthy.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
